He succeeds Lionel Messi, who had to watch an opponent lift the World Cup trophy. In tears, ‘La Pulga’ was honoured by the Argentine crowd after a final in which he was thoroughly neutralised by the Spanish defence.

Having won the title four years earlier in Qatar against France (3–3, 4–2 on penalties), Argentina lost in the 2026 World Cup final to Spain after a stunning run.
